Project description
Poland is one of the most diverse countries of Europe in terms of biological variety. This diversity is owed to the favourable natural conditions of the country, which are at the same time different to the conditions of other European countries, and to a smaller influence of man’s economy on the lands, as evidenced by Andrzejewski and Weigle (2003). In their book “Różnorodność biologiczna Polski” (Biological diversity of Poland), the authors emphasize that Poland is not only an enclave of these living resources, but also a possible source for their restitution. Thus, we are still able to preserve various constituents of nature in situ. This statement should motivate the performance of actions related to the project presenter herein. Note that these actions require adoption of novel solutions, which would take into account both economic and environmental interests.
However, Poland’s biological diversity is still vulnerable to many dangers that are typical of modern civilization. These include: a change in the manner of land use, including restriction or abandonment of traditional agricultural production methods, and the occurrences of succession and recession resultant from such, liquidation and fragmentation of habitats/ecosystems, and the abandonment of fields that are unfavourable for farming, as well as simplification, unification and destruction of the habitat mosaic.
The basic objective of this undertaking is to protect and preserve biodiversity in agricultural ecosystems, through an example provided by the model enclave of agricultural biodiversity in the Nidziańska Basin. The main assumption presented herein communicates that environmental protection should not be limited the maintenance of environment. Rather, we should consciously shape it, by learning the laws governing nature while simultaneously preventing any potential hazards.
Nidziańska Basin – the model enclave of agricultural biodiversity is an example not only for Poland, but for Europe as a whole. The project not only aims to preserve formerly cultivated plants with their accompanying weed species, but also shall provide education for students and pupils visiting the “enclave”, as well as for any other interested social group.
